Finally. RCMP commissioner Giuliano Zaccardelli resigned yesterday after his “misleading” testimony (lies) to a parliamentary committee investigating the deportation of an innocent man, Maher Arar, to a Syrian jail where he spent nearly a year being tortured. There is no doubt that Zaccardelli should be sacked. Either he knew the evidence against Arar that was passed on to the Americans was false, in which case he is at best corrupt, or he didn’t know about it and didn’t take any steps to find out about it, in which case he is at best incompetent. The only question is why the PM didn’t show him the door in September, when the report into the case was released demonstrating that RCMP incompetence was largely to blame for Arar’s deportation. Peter sums it up well here and here.
